Kirsch does appear to be wrong, or at least misleading, about Strauss, whose doctrine of esoteric teaching I don't think finds much acceptance outside of the Straussian circles. But I find it hard to get too exercised about one more debate on Strauss (there are learned bloggers I could name who go on about him at length, pro and con, esp. con).

As for Franzen, I read parts of 'The Corrections,' in total about a third of the book perhaps, skipping around some. I couldn't get through all of it, though the paperback is on my shelf. On 'Freedom,' I read quickly the utterly rhapsodic review in the Sunday NY Times Book Review, the praise in which was I thought probably excessive even though I have not read 'Freedom' and have no immediate plans to do so. (The novel I've started recently is 'Wolf Hall.' Whether I will finish it remains to be seen.)

Hi LFC,
I don't really expect what Franzen has to say about Strauss to be especially insightful. On the other hand, I kind of wonder whether Franzen's friendship with David Foster Wallace, who had studied philosophy, and whose father is a philosophy professor, might have had any influence on what he has the Straussian character say about "the philosopher."

Hilary Mantel happens to be one of my favorite novelists, but I read everything she had available in the US as of about 1999 and then didn't read anything else by her for a long time. I got to Beyond Black recently and was a little disappointed, though maybe the idea of a medium, with her dual loyalties to the dead and to "the punters," and the annoying male spirit guide on whom she is annoyingly also dependent, just isn't my thing. The one I like best is Eight Months on Ghazzah Street, which is nicely Orwellian.

Thanks for the tips re Mantel. If it turns out that I like Wolf Hall, maybe I will try Eight Months on Ghazza Street.
