I haven't seen the movie or read the novel, but since Chamberlain's heroics are probably among the most described aspects of the battle, it should not be too hard to get some rough idea of the relative accuracy of book and movie by looking at some historical accounts. Probably the movie takes more liberties with what is known to have happened.
